1. Not all cancers in the family are genetic in nature.

Approximately 10% of the cancers are genetic or familial in nature. Also, certain types of cancers are genetic in nature which require details understanding of the pedigree chart. (Also read: onlymyhealth.com)

The commonest cancers which are genetic in nature are as follows :

1.  Breast cancer

2 . Ovarian cancer

3. Uterine cancers 

3. Thyroid cancer 

4. Colorectal cancers

5. Stomach cancers

6. Pancreatic cancers 

7. Prostate cancers in Men 

8. Kidney cancers 

There could be different cancers running in the family which may indicates a particular syndrome OR there could be same organ cancer inherited in the family due to the genetic mutations. (For example Breast Cancer)

2. Yes. There are cancers which are genetic or familial in nature and can affect women.

Classical example is the Hereditary Breast Ovarian Cancers (HBOC). HBOC occurs due to Genetic mutation in the BRCA 1 AND BRCA 2 mutation.

They are susceptible for Breast Cancers and Ovarian Canders.These patients are also prone for other cancers like Pancreatic cancers.

Genetic cancers are also familial in nature and different cancers may run across various generations. This requires the understanding of pedigree chart of the family.

Syndromes associated with genetic cancers are :

1. Hereditary Breast and Ovarian Cancer syndrome 

2. Lynch Syndrome 

3. Hereditary Gastric Cancer

4. Hereditary Non-Polyposis Colorectal Cancer 

5. Hereditary Renal Cell Cancer

3. What are genetic cancers?

Genetic cancers are those cancers that run in families across different generations. All genetic cancers need not be familial. They may also possess Mutations in the gene that can cause cancers. There are driver mutations that lead to cancers in women. 

A mutation is defined as a change in the DNA code due to any insult. This leads to faulty DNA, and as a result, cancer is formed. This mutation can also be familial in nature.

Genetic cancers that can be seen in women are : 

1. Hereditary Breast And Ovarian Cancer syndrome : Causes Breast cancers,ovarian cancers, pancreatic cancers.

It is associated with BRCA1 and BRCA2 mutation.

3. Hereditary Gastric cancer

4. Hereditary Non Polyposis Colorectal Cancer 

5. Hereditary Renal Cell Cancer

6. Lung Cancer due to mutation in the driver Gene's

5. How to identify the genetic cancers :

1. History and examination 

2  Details of cancers I'm the family 

3. Pedigree chart 

4. Genetic counselling 

5. Genetic Testing: (Blood And Tissue)

6. What if genetic testing is positive? 

1. Fix an appointment with the Oncologist and Geneticist

2. Genetic Screening and counselling of the other family members as per the guidelines 

3. Prevention measures as per the Oncologist

7. If you have a cancer patient in your family, then you need to consult your Oncologist to understand the genetic nature.

However, you need not be panic as all cancers need not be familial or genetic in nature. They can simply be a sporadic case in your family.

It is imperative to consult your Oncologist whenever cancer is being diagnosed. He will guide you about the genetic nature of that particular cancers.

Cancers which affects younger generation, or if two or more successive generations have had cancers, then it strongly indicates some genetic or familial cancers
